The Rotary Club of Galveston recently awarded $2,500 to the Gulf Coast Center Veteran’s Program. These funds will be used to support the costs of community activities and outings for veterans. Those who have served in the military are aware of the strong bonds that are formed with their comrades. It is sometimes difficult to transition from military life to civilian life and the veteran can experience a lack of understanding from their civilian community and become isolated. The opportunity to bring veteran’s together to create an atmosphere of sharing and connecting is an important step in their transition process. Funds will also be used to assist veterans and their families with transportation to other community veteran services. The goal is to eliminate transportation barriers and challenges that may deter veteran participation in community events and activities.
There are currently two local sites where veterans gather for “peer to peer” transition groups. All veterans are welcome.
