The "Vet Van" will transport any veteran FREE OF CHARGE from Brazoria or Galveston County to the VA Hospital in Houston, as well as other locations in Galveston and Brazoria Counties. Interested riders can call 1-800-266-2320 to make arrangements for transportation.
The Gulf Coast Center was awarded 2 veteran grants in the last 6 months. The duration of each of the grants is until August 2011. There is a special focus on providing these services for OIF/OEF (Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom) veterans who are dealing with the aftermath of emotions and issues associated with their conflict experience. These services are provided in Galveston and Brazoria Counties.
A Veteran’s Task Force has been formed and meets monthly. Community partners, such as Galveston and Brazoria Veterans Service Officers, Texas Veterans Commission, Veteran’s Administration OIF/OEF Liaison, VFW and American Legion representatives, Veteran/Student organizations from surrounding colleges, College Counselors, and community organizations that work with homeless veterans, are all participants in the task force.
Veteran volunteers are trained in two curriculums. Bringing Everyone in the Zone is for all veterans who are interested in peer to peer support. Operation Resilient Families is only for veterans and family members associated with OIF/OEF conflicts. Licensed mental health counselors will also be providing therapy to veterans who may need it.
Any veteran or family member of a veteran interested in participating in a training or attending support workshops, please call Ramona Benton, Site Coordinator, at (409) 935-6083.
